When to choose the Semi-Heavy Pallet?
The right choice when at least one of these operating conditions applies:
National distribution with multiple cycles
Your pallet leaves the warehouse with goods, arrives at destination, gets emptied and returns to your circuit. After 5-10 cycles, the real cost per trip of the semi-heavy pallet is much lower than the one-way pallet once you add up replacements.
Examples: Distribution to your own branches, supplying your own retail outlets, B2B flows where the customer returns packaging, logistics platforms.
Racked storage with controlled load
If your warehouse has pallet racking and you work with loads not exceeding 800 kg per pallet, the semi-heavy pallet does the job without needing EPAL. The load must be well distributed, strapped and supervised.
Examples: SME distribution warehouses, mid-sized logistics platforms, secondary warehouses of large accounts.
Internal rotation in a production plant
You use it to move work-in-progress between lines, buffer zones and the final palletising area. Its strength handles plant pace, forklift manoeuvres and typical industrial warehouse conditions.
Examples: Beverage, food, light chemical, metalworking and general manufacturing plants.
Intra-EU export with return
Distribution within the EU where the customer returns the pallet. No need for NIMF-15 between member states (except Portugal as exporter and the Canary Islands). The semi-heavy pallet's extra strength justifies the return transport.
Examples: Flows with French, Italian or German customers who return packaging. Distribution with your own pallet pool.
If your pallet is single-use, the One-Way Pallet saves you between 30% and 40% compared to the semi-heavy pallet.

Manufacturing and production

Pharmaceutical and cosmetics
Compatible with hygienic packaging when the wood is grade A (no stains, no debris, no splinters). Specify the requirement in the order to guarantee grade A classification.
Intra-EU export
Works without NIMF-15 between EU member states. Exceptions: Portugal as exporter and the Canary Islands, where it is mandatory. For non-EU destinations, made to order, same lead time as delivery.

Frequently asked questions about the Semi-Heavy Pallet
01 Why is it called "semi-heavy" or "semi-new"?
"Semi" in the sense of "in between": it sits between the one-way pallet (light, single use) and the certified EPAL europallet (approved, maximum durability). The name describes its position in the market, not an official standard. Different suppliers call it "semi-new", "standard", "semi-heavy" or "intermediate".
02 Can I use it on racking?
Yes, with a controlled load. The semi-heavy pallet supports racking with well-distributed, strapped loads up to 800 kg. It's not a substitute for EPAL in mass or automated racking. If you're unsure about your case, send us a photo of the racking and typical load; we'll confirm compatibility before the sale.
03 How many cycles does it handle before breaking?
Between 5 and 15 internal cycles depending on the operation: load type, handling frequency, operator handling quality, and warehouse conditions. With careful handling and occasional repairs, we've seen semi-heavy pallets exceed 20 cycles.
04 Is it compatible with NIMF-15 for export?
Yes, made to order. We apply HT heat treatment (heating to 56°C for 30 minutes) with the IPPC stamp. The fumigation lead time matches the delivery time. Required for exporting to the US, China, Brazil, Mexico, the UK, Switzerland, Norway and most non-EU destinations.
05 What's the difference from a used EPAL pallet?
A used EPAL pallet is a certified europallet that carries the EPAL/EUR mark. The semi-heavy pallet doesn't carry the EPAL mark and isn't accepted in contracts that require certification. If your customer accepts non-EPAL, the semi-heavy pallet is more affordable. If EPAL is required, contact us for used or new EPAL.
06 Do you repair it when it breaks?
If you work with a closed loop (purchase + internal use + collection), yes: we repair structural damage at our facility and put the pallets back into stock. When a pallet no longer offers safe use, we remove it as wood waste and bring in new material.
07 What grade do you supply?
By default, we supply grade A/B: clean wood, no significant stains, no splinters, no broken boards, intact blocks. If your operation requires grade A only (hygienic food, pharmaceutical, premium cosmetics), specify it in the order and we'll adjust the selection.
08 Do you serve Lleida and Girona at competitive rates?
Yes. From Granollers, on the AP-7 corridor, we reach Girona in 50 minutes and Lleida in 1h45 via the A-2. For recurring volumes in both provinces, we offer scheduled routes at preferential rates.
